Dear colleagues,

Microsoft has announced changes to the way users verify their identity when signing in to Microsoft 365 and other Microsoft services.

Microsoft's SMS-based Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) service will be retired on February 1, 2027. 
Users who currently rely on SMS verification will need to move to an alternative authentication method before that date. 

In addition, starting September 1, 2026, Microsoft may display prompts encouraging users to register a passkey during the sign-in process. This is part of Microsoft's strategy to move towards more secure, phishing-resistant authentication methods. 

Important

  • SMS-based MFA will continue to work for now.
  • If you receive a prompt to register a passkey after September 1, 2026, please choose"Later","Skip", or postpone the setup if that option is available.
  • Please ensure that Microsoft Authenticator is configured before February 1, 2027, when Microsoft's SMS authentication service will be retired.


What do we ask you to do?

For now, please do NOT create a passkey when you receive such a prompt.

We are currently evaluating and testing passkey functionality within our organization. 
Once this assessment has been completed, we will provide further guidance and instructions.

What should you do instead?

If you currently use SMS verification for MFA, please switch to Microsoft Authenticator as soon as possible.

Microsoft Authenticator offers several advantages:

  • More secure than SMS-based verification
  • Recommended by Microsoft as a preferred MFA method
  • Supports future authentication improvements and security enhancements 


How can I check my current MFA method?

            1. Go to: https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info

            2. Select icon in the top right conand select switch organization

            3. Select Reasult BV from the list

4. Review your registered authentication methods.

5. If you only have SMS configured, please add Microsoft Authenticator.
